Hi. My name is Steve Bolhafner, and I work full-time as a newspaper librarian and do freelance writing in what I laughingly call my spare time.I live in St. Louis, Mo., which is also where I was born, although I haven't lived here all my life.
I did much of my growing up in and around Ironton, MO, about 100 miles south of St. Louis, where I graduated from Arcadia Valley High School, which used to have a home page, but since I couldn't connect to it the other day I've turned the link off until I find out what's going on.
After graduating from high school, I went to Kenyon College, in Gambier, Ohio. I dropped out after two years, kicked around St. Louis for awhile, went back to Kenyon and finally finished by degree in 1980 (Bill Watterson, who did "Calvin and Hobbes" was in my graduating class).
Then I did a year of graduate school at the world's first Popular Culture Department at Bowling Green State University, also in Ohio. No degree, though. I dropped out again.
During my two years "on leave" from Kenyon I discovered computers for the first time, playing Star Trek and Cavern on the mainframe at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. The latter wasn't really a game but a good example of how a finite series of instructions can create something that is potentially infinite. It was an endlessly growing series of cave tunnels on which anyone who visited could write graffitti. Of course, these were all text games. One of the terminals still had a teletype instead of a screen.
After developing the kind of resume you often see on the backs of books of bad poetry (bartender, pizza delivery driver, singing telegram messenger), I moved back to St. Louis in 1983. Currently, I work for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. My job title is News Researcher, which means I surf the 'net and commercial online services (including big, expensive ones like Lexis-Nexis) to do research for reporters, and train them in the use of our in-house system that archives articles back to 1981. I have other duties as well, but that's the fun part.
I'm married to a wonderful woman named Susan who puts up with my spending hours on the 'net in good humor (most of the time) and I have a lovely daughter named Elizabeth.
